The Saga Continues: 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame

The 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame list was made public on Saturday. There were some usual suspects. This list is deep. After the selection process has been complete, I am sure there is going to be both happy and people upset by the results.

I am still very unclear as to why Donnie Shell, Lester Hayes, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Ray Guy, Cliff Branch, Russ Francis, Joe Theisman etc., etc are vying to get in with the likes of Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice. The point I'm trying to make is that these gentleman should have been in the fall of fame so long ago. I have read the outline of the process, but when players such as these and others have been left out of the hall for so long, it is time to re-think the process.

I'm really happy that Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice are going to be shoe ins. In a perfect world, so should have been the aforementioned players.

"Stepchild"

After MSU's 33-30 lost to Notre Dame yesterday, it began clear to me that MSU is following in the paths of Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Kentucky, Louisville and the like in making its football program the stepchild to basketball. For pigskin lovers, like myself, this is extremely disheartening. Thank goodness for the NFL and programs like Ohio State University, University of Alalbama and the like that make basketball the stepchild to there football programs.

ESPN has a poll this morning asking how many more games are left to the NBA Finals. Let me answer that question for you, "Not more than five." If you don't have a babysitter, get one. If you don't have a TIVO or DVR, get one. This is needed in case you attend church on Sunday evenings. If you don't live near a sports bar or own a big screen TV, find one or buy one.

On Sunday, Kobe Bryant is going to deliver a performance worthy of the NBA Finals MVP he will earn, an Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and a Tony award. This little odyssey began with the trading of Shaq, changing his number from 8 to 24, the subconscious anger felt by the public and the NBA anointing LaBron James, an unproven king by the way, its new face, the loss to the Pistons in '04, the loss to the Celtics in '08. Talk about getting your popcorn ready.

I'm not sure what to expect, but I promise it won't be pretty for the Magic. This beat down will be akin to waking up one morning and having great sex with your man, going off to work only to return home to an empty house and a Dear John letter indicating that your man wants a divorce. When the wife asks her man, why the divorce and why the great sex in the morning? He replies,” I got sick of the disrespect, and as far as the great sex, you'll never forget who I am--"The Man, the truth" (Kobe Bryant).

First, I am outraged by the rumors of firing Mike Brown. I would rather see the coach of the Denver Nuggets fired, but that is another story for another time. Second, Skip Bayless of ESPN is an idiot and should be fired for suggesting that Mike Brown be fired and that LaBron can’t win the big one with him at the helm.

LaBron didn’t get into the NBA finals this year because he came up against a better team in the Orlando Magic. During the regular season Orlando beat the Cavs 4 out of the six times they played. Also, LaBron’s supporting cast needs help. Get LaBron a better supporting cast, and I promise you the big game will come.

I was also outraged by Skip Bayless assertion that LaBron needed a coach of “statue.” He began to rattle off names like Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, and Pat Riley etc. Question? Can anybody tell me who these men were before Michael Jordan, the Pistons, and Magic Johnson? Perhaps, Skip Bayless didn’t name any African-American coaches because with the exception of the great Bill Russell, Black coaches have not been given the same opportunities, past or present, to get it right over a period of time as others have. I’ll say it, White coaches.

For Skip Bayless to suggest that LaBron was acting as coach during periods of the Orlando series is insulting, a slap in the first to Mike Brown, and not the first time a star player exerted influence. I’m sure Phil listened to Michael Jordan. Paul Westhead got fired because he refused to listen to Magic. Does one think Kobe doesn’t have some juice right about now? Think again.

I would agree that there needs to be some changes in the NBA, but not starting with the Coach of the Year—Mike Brown.

"Swept Away"

Not only is the bloom out of the closet, but the dustpan. If Orlando doesn't come out smokin' on Tuesday, this thang is a wrap. I'm not sure if Orlando is awed by the LA bright lights, the movie stars, Kobe or what. Questions? Why is JJ Reddick handling the ball. Why hasn't Dwight Howard received more playing time? This is a problem on all cylinders. Van Gundey and his staff need to get it together or the disrepect of what has been a great Orlando season will continue and deservingly so.

For a long time, people have been making the comparison between LaBron James and Michael Jordan. Well, that comparison was not made more clear than last night. Remember when the Detroit Pistons beat the Chicago Bulls, and remember how Michael Jordan acted? Last night LaBron James acted in that similar classless fashion by not talking to the media, shaking hands and congratulating the winning team (Orlando Magic). LaBron has never been camera shy before. I guess we can "chalk" this behavior up to being a sore loser and classless. If we have more of this to look forward to from the "King", the question then becomes, "how is this sportsman like?" How can we justify calling him a winner, and more importantly, what do we tell the kids?

I was always told to never count my chickens before they are hatched. The NBA Commissioner, the City of Cleveland and all you other LaBron James fans should have learned this same lesson. So, I say to all of you this morning, go ahead and pay off your bets because I am definitely going to get my money this morning, not to mention talk big shit in the process, cry on your pillows, and for goodness sake, get rid of those ugly muppets that look neither like Kobe (The Truth) or LaBron (Sore LOSER).

Lastly if I may shed some light on this lose by the Cavs to the season the Pistons had when they lose to the Spurs in the NBA Finals. I remembered Chauncy Billups saying that they played hard all year long for home court advantage throughout, swept through the playoffs, and by the time they got to the Spurs in the finals, they were just exhausted. Now, if a complete team, at the time, like the Pistons got exhausted in the finals, what in the heck did you guys think would happen to the one man show? I saw how exhausted LaBron James looked last night. He couldn't give anymore because he had carried that team the entire season. the NBA is a "team sport starting with the center position." One man can no longer do it alone than Fred Astaire could dance the Waltz without Ginger Rogers.

I didn't get the NBA Finals I wanted. I thought Denver was a much better team and should have won. I also think the Denver coach should be fired. Remember the Dallas Mavericks fired Avery Johnson, and he lost the finals. Carl has had a great team for some years now that has underachieved. Not all of this is his fault entirely; however, we are a society that honors, respects and reveres leadership. Carl is ultimately responsible for this fiasco. On the other hand, I would like to see Kobe win won without Shaq. Shaq was classless last year with his rap rendition of how Kobe still needed him or couldn't win one without him. I get confused with the silly bullshit of NBA players sometimes.

As I stated, the NBA is a team sport beginning with the center spot. Every great team has had one and Orlando is no exception. I plan to watch every game because I am a fan, and not because I have an allegance to one player over the other. It will be fun to watch. My last words," may the best team win."

Someone coined the phrase,"A picture is worth a thousand words." For anyone who has been the victim of a drunk driver. This blog entry is for you. Anyone who is currently risking getting behind the wheel and driving drunk. This blog entry is for you. Students and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, this blog entry is for you.

This morning, I watched ESPN's story on Donte' Stallworth who recently got behind the wheel of his car intoxicated and killed someone. I have been the victim of a person driving drunk twice in my life. I thank God I survived both times. The following individuals were not so lucky:

Local Waitress--Long Beach, California
Wife and Mother Lost in Drunk Driving Collision
Santa Maria Man Killed in DUI Collision
Woman Killed, 4 hurt in DUI Collision--Orlando, Florida

I never knew these people personally, but someone did. As a teenager, I remembered how relentless MADD and SADD used to be. I saw so many public service announcements and billboards everywhere. I don't doubt that these organizations still exist, but it is like with anything, the minute you let up and think people get the message, the problem continues to get worse.

This article is not designed to make Donte'Stallworth feel any worse than I'm sure that he already does. It must be hell to have on your heart the fact that you have killed someone. I feel badly for he and his family and all the other people who suffered and continue to suffer from this disease. They, too, need prays and help.

Before I end, I got one question? While, I'm sure the victims' family will come after Donte' Stallworth, I don't want them to forget the motherfucker or motherfuckers who let Donte' Stallworth get behind the wheel of his car drunk. They should be implicated as well. If they offered to drive him home, or called the police to inform them he was driving drunk, them my apologies to you for calling you out of your name. But if none of you did either of these things, then the motherfucker stands.

Perhaps, this is the consequence when people allow athletes and other celebrities to conduct themselves as if they are above the law or can't be told no. We just like them get dragged into whatever suffering they cause to others and to themselves.

"Salty": Coming Out of Hiberation!

Hello friends. It's NCAA Men's Basketball Tournement time! Yesterday was an exciting day, but I would be remissed if I didn't put my spin on the highlights. Lets start with the Big Ten Conference. First, can anyone tell me how many teams are in this tournament that lost games in double digits without winning their own tournament conference? The answer to that question is none besides the Big Ten Conference.

I bring this up because my brackets got all out of whack because of the Big Ten Conference. First, Michigan had no business in that game yesterday with Clemson. Michigan finished their season with an overall record of 21-13. I heard people talking this morning on the radio about the return of Michigan. Ah! The only return Michigan is going to need is a return airline reservation back to Ann Arbor.

With regards to Clemson, Michigan got at the ass ealy, and it was history. Clemson's lost to Michigan was inexcusable, and that's my only comment on their sorry asses.

Let's talk Illinois. President Obama and me are not the only people with hurt feelings about this lost. Again, Illinois should have never received an invitation. They like Michigan finished their season with double digit loses (24-10). Hell, I've never heard of Western Kentucky or the conference they represent. I'm not sure if they will beat Gonzaga or not. I had Illinois beating Gonzaga and UNC beating them. This part of my bracket will balance itself out after this game has been playd.

Last notes: As far as Michael Jordan's son is concerned with his Division II level playing, Herve Villechaize (Tattoo, Fantasy Island) lookin' ass. I hope he takes up coaching cause that is as close to the NBA as he'll get. Unlike his father, he is yummy looking. I probably would get a kick out of seeing an handsome coach in the NBA. There are only a few, and even fewer who know how to dress. I miss Pat Riley. He stayed clean--hair and all.

Good Luck shoutouts to: Wisconsin and Ohio State. You see what happened to Minnesota. These teams finished their seasons with double digit losses as well. Only two teams should have surfaced from the Big Ten Conference--the regular season winner and tournament champion (MSU and Purdue).

You got nothing! That famous line from the motion picture, “The Score” sums up the current predicament of the New York Jets. How in the hell anyone can say that the year Brett Favre spent in New York was worth it is beyond me. Maybe you guys sold some jerseys that one day may be worth something. Maybe it was a great distracting from the New York Knicks. Perhaps you sold more tickets to Jets’ games, but you gave up more than was gained in the process. Stick a pin in that for a moment will you.

For a career which should have ended with imagery like this: 1st Player to win AP (MVP) Award 3 Times, Most Consecutive QB Starts, Most QB Victories, Most Career Touchdown Passes (etcetera, etcetera……..)

Brett Favre left the New York Jets looking like this:

Let’s evaluate that crazy trade shall we. The Green Bay Packers trade Brett Favre to the New York Jets for about a week and one-half bad publicity, gained a few angry fans, and will receive a third round pick in the 2009 draft. The Jets lost a conditional fourth round pick because although Brett started in 80% of the games, the Jets didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. The Jets coach got fired. They lost Chad Pennington to Miami who had the worst season last year and made it into the playoffs. And now, the Jets have no quarterback.

This is what happens when we (fans) make players bigger than the team concept and the game itself. I’m not pondering whether or not Brett’s shoulder will feel better in two months. I could care less if he changes his mind. Come back and play for the Lions. He could certainly help them win at least a game, if the Lion’s offensive line doesn’t get him killed first.

All jokes aside, the best outcome here is to leave in the way that he should have in the beginning with grace. The sun eventually sets for every player whether he wants it to or not. Will he get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Yes. Will fans always love Brett Favre? Yes.

Ty Lawson scored a career high 25 points with 21 of those points coming in the second half in UNC's 101-87 victory over the Duke Blue Devils. In his press conference, Coach K acknowldeged that, " Lawson played like a pro tonight." "He played as well as any point guard against us in a long time." I think this pretty much sums up the beat down.

Sidebar: I noticed the University of Oklahoma's coach Bob Stoops at the game. Bob Stoops don't need to be in Durham, North Carolina. He still needs to be thankful for the BCS nod over the University of Texas in addition to his office studying film from that BCS Title Game lost to the Florida Gators. While you were there, Bob, did you chat with Coach Williams, K or better yet Coach Cowher on what a real winner looks like? The nerve of some people.

Baseball's Disgrace

I’ve never been an Alex Rodriquez fan. I don’t like the fact that he plays for my all time favorite sports team. In my opinion, Alex Rodriquez has never felt like a Yankee. He never looked good in the “pinstripes” from the back in the way that Dave Winfield, “Mr. October, Willie Randolph and others looked. You can file that last comment under girl just want to have fun. Meaning, only a woman and real female Yankee fan would get it.

However, all jokes and fun aside, this latest baseball steroid story has brought me out from under, “my indifference rock.” While I have never liked Alex Rodriquez, the lack of integrity disturbs me more. It is my understanding that when these players were screened or tested in 2003 that the results were supposed to be “confidential.” Question, how did Alex Rodriquez’s test result become public? Why did we run to the bias media to ask if A-Rod would become a MLB Hall of Famer? Why was the first instinct to protect the reporter of this story’s source?

Why do we think that Jose Canceso has some how been vindication when he has been allowed, for profit and press mind you, to expose his fellow baseball brethren in the name of capitalism? Jose Canceso or the people who helped him don’t give a damn about baseball, and that’s what makes what he has done all the more sickening. He doesn’t care about the preservation and integrity of America’s past time. He is a self professed cheater. When do self professed cheaters get “air-time?” Jose Canseco is an angry man who wants others to join him in his misery. Question, why do we as Americans feed off of this type of individual and story? What is inherently wrong with us when we think it is okay for one to expose another knowing that none of us are perfect and knowing that the innocent will also be harmed?

I say this to say that A-Rod’s privacy was violated. I do not condone the use of performance enhancing drugs in sports, but the bigger question is why athletes and others take this risk in the first place. Me, you, them have grown up in a culture that places value (both intrinsic and extrinsic) on an individual because of the money they make, their occupation, the person they are sleeping with at the time, their friends and a host of other insane criteria.

To date, I see no one calling for the resignation of Bud Selig, the sanctioning of any owner or calling for a full scale investigation of anyone at the top (the union, agents, and lawyers). All of baseball is guilty. The goal was to save baseball by any means necessary due to the anger brought on by the fans about the strike and the heat of competition felt by the NBA and NFL, which brings me to the next question. Why do we knowingly allow others to destroy themselves in the name of profit, and when it becomes inconvenient, we throw these people under the bus? I was taught that lying is wrong. Lying under oath is even worst. All people who work in baseball take an oath to protect its institution. Let’s indict Bud Selig, the owners, the imperfect media, for years that has been gender and racially bias, who would use any excuse not to celebrate the contributions of a man of color. Yes, I invoked the race card because it has been in the deck that has been stacked against most people of color in America. Read your history, if you got a problem with this statement, and come back to it.

I always ask people who watched baseball, in this so-called steroid or Pete Rose era, where they were when Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro Jose Canseco, Pete Rose and others where making the ultimate sacrifice of their bodies and integrity, for profit, and why did we allowed it, and why we think by punishing them makes where we were when it happened or their baseball contributions any less real.

I was there. We were all there, and we all watched and said nothing. Stop lying! We knew just as a parent knows when their child is in trouble, if they love them and are paying attention. The answer is we didn’t care. We were selfish. Hopeful this drama and the lives a people destroyed will make us get involved and not when we seek fame or profit by doing it, but because we genuinely give a damn about others and what happens to them. All of us could be the next A-Rod. I don’t see this story just having an impact on sports. Anyone can be harmed from any occupation in the name of someone’s revenge or goal to seek fame or that promotion.

.....and then there were six. All day, I thought about what I could name this blog entry to celebrate the most storied franchise in all of American sports. I thought about the title "Cardinal Knowledge", but there was only one title to describe what I saw this evening, and it is simply "10." Though it was a complete team effort in the end, there was but one who could claim the title of Super Bowl MVP, and this year it was 10 (Santonio Holmes). With but seconds to go, Rothisberger lead his team down the field to find at the end the perfect 10.

I have been a Steelers fan all of my life. I can not think of a game that had greater significance (Tomlin, youngest coach and African-American) and sixth Lombardi Trophy on the line. This year's festivities did not disappoint. From the pre-game show, the first three points of the game, The Boss's kick-ass halftime performance to the trophy presentation, in the final analysis, it was all Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are still in charge.

T.O. for some is the gift that keeps on giving, and for others, the gift you can't give back. We don't need a reality show about the life and times of T.O. When has the public not been privy to Terrell’s private and professional life? T.O. has always allowed us into his living room, locker room and any place else the cameras would follow-sometimes with a face filled with popcorn or a shinny nose.

I am bothered by the fact that VH1 is going to allow two pop tarts to provide mock therapy to an individual who really needs help. This show could set a real bad precedent for people who really need help. We don't need to laugh. What T.O needs is professional intervention.

Lastly, if a 35 year old man doesn't know how to find a woman by now, I don't see what his friends can do at this point to assist him. In order to find love, you must first love yourself. I wouldn’t advise any woman to enter the chaotic world of T.O.

Lakers: Western Conference Finals again?

As I examine the Western Conference as we near the NBA All-Star break, It appears that the Lakers maybe headed to the Western Conference Finals again. While San Antoinio is experienced, the sand in their hour glass maybe running out. Chris Paul and Hornets are still in building mode. The Houston Rockets and the Phoenix Suns, although regretable, will do what they always do get hurt or choke. I personally don't think the Denver Nuggets have enough. I miss you Mr. Big Shot.

The team that worries me is the Utah Jazz. Lets stay tuned.

Everytime I watch the new State Farm Insurance commerical wih LeBron James, I wonder why State Farm didn't go out and get an actual Cleveland Browns player like Braylon Edwards. Watching the commerical reminds me of the jingle Barry Mannilow wrote many years ago (Like a good neighbor State Farm is there.) Seeing LeBron in this commerical doesn't make me want to go out and purchase State Farm Insurance especially seeing him out of his element. I don't get the point they are trying to make. When his contract with the Caviliers is up, no on believes he plans to try out for football much less the Cleveland Browns.

On a personal note, I am personally tired of Madison Avenue utilizing athletes who play well on the court, but don't exhibit maturity in "real life."

I preface these comments by saying I mean no disrespected to the number of Americans who have lost their homes during this mortage crisis. However, there is only one word I could think of in the English language to describe the ass kicking Duke put on Maryland yesterday in their 85-44 win. From all indications, Duke hasn't beat down anyone this bad since 1963. DAMN!

When I checked the ESPN/USA and the AP Polls both had Duke ranked at #2. The funny thing is I didn't see Maryland at all. I didn't even see Maryland in that small section referred to as honorable mention. My question is then, How the hell did #21 Greivis Vasquez think he was going into Duke (Cameron Fieldhouse) and beat a #2 ranked team in the national with the roster Maryland had?

Here again, this is a classic case of another player who needs to keep his mouth shut. I really can't describe to you this beat down, so I have attached a picture of #21 that tells the story. I say to Vasquez, "Next time you start poppin' off at the mouth make sure you can back it up."

Out of respect for our 44th President of the United States, I keep trying to turn the page, but there are some issues that remain unresolved and need to be addressed.

First, where was PETA and the Humane Society when dogs were turned on African-Americans. Did anyone ask for the decendents of these officers and others for a psych eval? Do you know how many generations of these families that are still in law enforcement?

If the sixties go to far back for you, where was PETA and the Humane Society when the pit bull ate the baby in New York as a result of being left on its own by its mother?

Where was PETA and the Humane Society in Detroit, Michigan and every other major Urban Center and yokal backwater playground on Friday and Saturday nights where the dogs fighting is on and poppin'?

I say all this to that these organizations are like others (i.e. the media) who use high profile people, preferably African-American males, to raise money, not consciousness, to further line their pockets. Its not about the dogs, Its about the money, getting on television, advancing their careers. In America, everyone knows how valuable 15 minutes of fame can be at the expense of a Black man. Ask Joe the plumber or Marcia, the attorney, from the OJ Trial.

Michael practiced poor judgement there is absolutely no doubt about that. Should athletes practice better judgement when picking associates? You betcha!

I have this to say to PETA and organizations like them who have rode the backs of, advanced their careers as a result of, and stand on the shoulders of Black men. Find a new gig. Find a new poster boy, or better yet, just start working hard and stop depending on ethnicity (White) to be the entitlement as it has so frequently worked for you in the past.

A Different Perspective

I have read some articles on the Wade divorce. The few I've read leave out some critical pieces. I'd like to comment on those few pieces simply because no one else has.

Firstly, no wife no matter how handsome, wealthy or high profile her husband is or becomes wants to believe going into marriage that he would be dishonest.

Second, any divorce papers filed becomes a matter of public record. We only care about this one because it is Dewayne Wade and who he is.

Here's the part in this equation that is often missed. While it really isn't our business who or how many women he slept with, what is our business and his wife's is the names of the women he has slept with, if this information is true.

Public health is potentially at risk here and sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise--especially among Black women. Individuals who have unprotected sex with others has slept with everyone that individual or individuals that person has slept with. In he world of HIV/AIDS and other transmittable diseases and because of these two children, his wife absolutely has a right to know this information. Who knows what could surface a year or two from now.

His wife is angry and she has every right, in my humble opinion, to be. She has been betrayed. As for him cutting her off financially, if true, speaks to his character.

The lesson I hope is learned here is that women need to start respecting themselves and the sanctity of other peoples marriages. It is not cool or hip, ever, to sleep with another womens' husband I don't care what lie he tells you. Men are out of control because women are out of control. Women offer men too many options and because they are men, they exercise them.

Remembering Curt Flood

As I reflect on one of the greatest of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. men (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), I am reminded of Curt Flood. Curt Flood is one of those sports pioneers who is often not mentioned, but those who love the game of baseball recognize him for his many baseball contributions.

What this generation doesn't know is that players from all sports have Curt Flood to thank for the advent of free agency. After the 1969 season, Flood challenged the reserve clause in baseball refusing a to be traded. He appealled his case the the United States Supreme Court, and although unsuccessful, this challenge of the system brought about greater solidarity among players and thus the advent of free agency.

The Future v. The Truth

This whole debate about LeBron and Kobe is getting pretty tired. This is not the first time that the NBA has had more than one dominate player at a time (Elgin Balylor, Wilt the Stilt, Bill Russell, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Shaq, Akeem the Dream, Kareem, Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Wes Unsel, Clyde Drexel etc....).

My personal preference is Kobe Bryant. Kobe has the rings, the MVP, the Gold Medal etc. While LeBron has some of these successes to his credit, until he wins the big one, he is still the future, and Kobe is the truth.

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves once again in the L-column. No one is a bigger fan of the Eagles much less McNabb, but the Eagles didn't play well. It was dejavu from last year. The Packers didn't have an answer for Burress, and the Eagles didn't have an answer for Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald and Warner showd up and showd out--period.

I think the question of whether McNabb should be the quarterback for the Eagles next season is an unfair one; however, going to the Superbowl and losing, appearing in five NFC title games and losing four times does require somebody go back to the drawing board. Since football is a team sport, I suggest chalk boards all around.

I see that Tim Tebow has opted to stay in college for one for year. Why I see nothing wrong with that, I think there might be a couple other motivations. First, Tim Tebow is staying in school to work on his fundamentals as he states, or Tim Tebow is staying in college because he wants to be the second player in the history of college football to win the Heisman twice, or he knows just as I that a GM would be crazy not to draft him first and the Lions are on deck. Sounds like a very diplomatic way of saying heck naw to Detroit. I'm from Detroit, and I don't blame you. Lastly, it is a combination of all these things.

While Kyle Whittingham's loyalty to is university and players is commendable, he is out of his mind casting a vote for the University of Utah to be the BCS National Champions.

First in my humble opinion, it is the Big Ten and then everyone else; however, when I checked out the Utes schedule, I found the University Michigan- a team in worse condition before they brought Bo in the late 60's, Weber State University, which I learned for the first time is located somewhere in Utah, Air Force, Wyoming, New Mexico, which by the way has not been a real good football team since the great Ronnie Lott, BYU, and last but certainly not least UNLV who I thought only had a basketball with a former coach who sucked towels. Can anyone tell me where Grand MaMa is?

To make a long story short, the only real team (Alabama) they played this year they did beat in their bowl game. But perhaps Alabama was a little more beat up because they played a real schedule. Perhaps Utah was a little fresher because they played no real conference powerhouses with the exception of Oregon State (Pac-10) and Michigan (Big Ten). Based on their strength of schedule, they should not have even been in that game with Alabama. Play some teams in the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10 and maybe you too will get some respect.

We don't need a playoff system for me to know that Florida, Ohio State, USC, Georgia, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Texas would beat the hell out of Utah.

Adam Jones: See Ya!

There comes a time when it is time to go. It is Adam Jones' time to go. He should have never been in Dallas, and he most definately should have never worn the Jersey number 21.

In his response to his comment about, "loving him some him", people who love themselves don't go into strip clubs with garbage bags of money with the intentions of making it rain, which subsequently got someone hurt for the rest of their life. People who love themselves and respect the game of pro football keep a low profile and not beat up body guards hired to protect them. You should have taken a tip from your teammate Marion Barber and kept your mouth shut and played ball. Did you notice that when Mr. Jones jumped on him, he didn't need to say a word because his sarrogates, including me, took care of Mr. Jones. Adam if you don't learn anything else from this experience, learn to walk soft and carry a bigger stick than you have in the past. Don't tell people what you will do or voice what is important to you carry out these deeds.

You were given an opportunity that you squandered. This is unfortunate because I really believe football is important to you, but before you made all those sacrifices to get to the pro level, you should have done very thing in your power to mature. It is your level of maturity that has landed you in this predicament. Grow up and come back strong. I believe it's in you, but your days as football player are over. Try being a great dad and respectable human being. These are excellent occupations as well.

Pro Football Hall of Fame: 2009 Finalist List

Out of respect for Michael Irvin's contributions to the game of football and the fact that he delivered one of the best Pro Football Fame of Fame speeches I've ever heard, I let up on voicing my politics regarding this selection process, but I have to draw the damn line with Charles Haley and Ray Guy.

First Ray Guy, can somebody tell me why there is a coveted award in college football bearing this great punter's name, but Ray Guy is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? I watched Ray Guy play as a child, and I can tell you that in his day, Ray Guy was the truth. Go Raiders! Raise hell about this candidate. He is very worthy.

Last but certainly not least, Charles Haley (Alpha Man-Skee-Phi!) is the only man I know with 5 Super Bowl Rings and at least 5 Pro Bowl appearances. Since football is a game that starts at the line, why is it that we have issues making sure that lineman are given their just due. Remember, defense wins championships on both sides of the ball. While Joe Montana and Troy Aikman were great quarterbacks. In order to be a great quarterback, you need an offensive line protecting you and the defensive to handle their business when it is their turn on the field. Both Dallas and the 49ers had such players and Charles Haley was among them.

P.S. Go Richard Dent! I love you equally. Can somebody help me find Cris Carter's SuperBowl rings.

This morning Cris Carter phoned in or was called by ESPN’s, Mike and Mike in the Morning. I thought his comments about Terrell Owens were insensitive in light of the fact that crime in America is leveling off while crime against African American males appear to be on the rise says the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation Report). His metaphor of shooting Terrell Owens was inappropriate.

While I would agree that Terrell Owens spends too much time imposing his views on us (the general public), I would disagree with Mr. Carter's assessment that Terrell Owens should be the first Dallas Cowboy to be let go. Thank GOD! Terrell Owens has kept his mouth shut long enough for people to really begin to shift the focus where it belongs—on the leader of the team, the quarterback. I have known for quite some time that Tony Romo was in trouble, but his recent press conference comments removed all doubts. He replied, “If we win its okay, and if we lose its okay.” Would someone explain to this young man that when you play for the team that plays under the moniker of “America’s Team” that winning is not just okay but expected.

The Dallas Cowboys have been in trouble for a long while, which is why I was at a quandary as to why Boomer on ESPN’s NFL Countdown selected them to win. There was no way Dallas was going to beat Philadelphia in Philadelphia irrespective of whether Philadelphia controlled its destiny. Let me tell you why. Anytime a team (the Dallas Cowboys) allowed another team (the Baltimore Ravens) to come into their “house” for the last game ever to be play at Texas Stadium in front of all those Cowboy legends (Roger, Randy, Michael, Emmitt, Tony, Deion etc, etc….) and couldn’t win one for the gipper. There was no way in hell they were going into Philadelphia and muster up enough motivation to beat Philly in Philly.

Let me finish by stating that I have no doubts that changes will be made in the Dallas Cowboy locker room; however, I am waiting for ESPN and their competitors to give an opportunity to real analysts/broadcasters and stop employing inarticulate former athletes who love to hear themselves talk not to mention speak ill of other African-Americans. An increase in crime against African-American males is tragic. An inarticulate male of any ethnicity who doesn’t care enough about their new career to learn what is required punishes us all.

When Brad Johnson stepped in for injured Tony Romo, no one put him on blast for being inadequate. When Tony Romo failed to score from one yard out in a playoff game, no one put him on blast. When Demarcus Ware kept jumping off sides in the Tampa Bay game like a jack rabbit, no one put him on blast. Since Terrell Owens has been in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, no one, but the media has put him on blast. For all the stupid shit Adam Jones has done before and to date, no one, but the media has put him on blast. After throwing two interceptions, no one put Tony Romo on blast. Jason Whitten tried to defend him and insult our intelligence at the same time by indicating that somehow he was at fault. I don't know how he could say this when Tony Romo threw the ball in the Steelers' receiver's hands.

I say all this to say that if the Dallas Cowboys are still in the "playoff conversation", it is because of the consistent play and team work of Marion Barber, III. Marion is quiet, consistent, hard working and tough. If he was not in the game on Sunday, I believe it was because he was unable to be. To be singled out, scapegoated and put on blast by the owner and GM was thoughtless and cruel.

Marion Barber, III is the least of the Dallas Cowboys problems. First, Tony Romo is no Troy Aikman or Roger Staubach. Since week one, it has been difficult to distinguish the head coach from the support staff. The Dallas Cowboys have alot of good players who don't play well together. Again, Brad Johnson was an inadequate replacement for Tony Romo. The Cowboys should have taken a three week vacation if he was the best they had.

As Mr. Jones so eloquently put it, "I own the team, and I can't be fired." I say to Mr. Jones take responsibility for the team "you" put together. If anyone is to blame for the Dallas Cowboys' failure, it is you! You sir are smart, tough and to be respected. Take the necessary steps to return your team to glory whatever it takes. Remeber, you're the boss. Attitude is always reflective of leadership.

Can somebody tell me why the University of Spoiled Children Alum (Carson Palmer) is bad mouthing Ohio State University? Doesn’t he know that Jim Tressel is a God, an institution, and the man who has kicked Michigan’s ass four years in a row? Okay.

Ohio State University got it going on. In fact, the Big Ten Conference is the premier conference in college football. Okay. Forget the SEC, and the hell with Notre Dame. By the by, when is USC going on probation for all the NCAA violations they have committed. People who live or lived in glass houses should not throw stones.

Speaking of Mr. Palmer personally, what the hell has he done for the Cincinnati Bengals outside look as bad as the other members of the roster in that horror they call a uniform. When I read his bio on the Internet, it indicated that he was the first quarterback draft number one since Vinnie Testaverde in 1987. Well, I wouldn’t bet the farm if that is the quarterback lineage he is following.

When USC come to the horseshoe in 2010 or whenever he mentioned, they are going to get their asses kicked like everybody else. They too will have memories to tell their children, like Palmer, of an Ohio State Buckeye ass kickin’.

Super Bowl or Bust?

I saw Deion on the Internet last week in an interview with Rich discussing the coming season. I miss not having the NFL Network. Time Warner Cable is still playing hardball. Until such time I can get the NFL Network, I must watch Deion via NFL Network website. I hate not having Prime Time in real time. Holla, if you hear me.

I do have to disagree with Deion in his assessment of the Dallas Cowboys. It's a bust baby. You heard it here first. The Washington Redskins are going to the Super Bowl. The Hogs are back! I know what you saying. The Dallas Cowboys, like Deion mentioned, is deep at every position, but so was the England Patriots, and you saw what happened.

Last year I told people the Packers were going to the Super Bowl and nobody believed me. The Giants put it on a silver platter for them by beating Dallas in Dallas. People were bothered by Brett Farve's interception. That interception became a moot point when Charles Woodson and Al Harris could not stop Plaxico Buress (Go Green!). It was curtains, and you know the rest of the story.

However, I saw in the Redskins at the end of this season what I was in the Packers in their previous season, not to mention the acquisition of twinkle toes (Jason Taylor), and it is on.

Can you imagine the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop? Now, you can see why the owl unashamedly and impatiently takes a bite. That’s how slow Jake Long (former Wolverine as of Saturday) is. The Miami Dolphins need a quarterback, a running back and a new secondary. I can’t believe they are making a very slow offensive lineman their franchise player.

I never tripped about the money athletes make. My motto is: “Get all you can get while you can get it.” They’ll need it to pay for a new set of legs in the future…. (to be continued)

Best Damn Sports Clinic Period (continued)

As the NBA playoffs vastly approached, everyone thought that the wild, wild, west would put on a show for the ages. Let me tell you, they have not disappointed the fans. I’ll get to the east momentarily. Most people were chopping at the bits for a Kobe v. Shaq championship series. I just wanted people to take me serious when I said that Utah had a chance. While I don’t think they’ll be laughing in the end, Utah is a good team, but a championship series is not in the cards, yet.

As for Phoenix, all I can say is the coach of this team, the Denver Nuggets and poor Avery Johnson will probably be searching for employment. I like Avery Johnson. I like Jason Kidd, but the trade for Kidd was the wrong number. Jason Kidd had nothing in his body of work to suggest he could lead a team to a championship much less shared in the sweet success of one. As a Spartan (MSU) alumnus, I take issue with the constant comparison to Magic. I am Cal alum also, but Kidd is no Magic. Michael Jordan isn’t either, but that is a nugget for another conversation.

Speaking of Nuggets, the Denver Nuggets is a really good team with really good players who are currently underachieving. As much as I like Tracey McGrady, I’ll just pay him respect with the mentioning of his name. Frankly, I am sick of San Antonio. I haven’t forgiven Ginobli for all the 3-point shots against Detroit in their series three years ago. You see were this is headed.

The wild, wild, west is culminating into the best damn sports clinic period. I can’t wait until the Lakers play New Orleans. I love Chris Paul, but Kobe is getting ready to take this brother to school. It may hurt to watch, and it may also hurt Kobe more than Chris Paul, but it will be a lesson well learned for the future(typical parental psychological mumbo jumbo). Look out Kobe, Chris Paul has officially put the NBA on notice. After the Lakers and New Orleans, everything else is anti-climatic.

As far as the Boston Celtics, they look flawless. If were not from Detroit, I would be rooting for them. Kevin Garnett in my opinion is the NBA MVP. I know it is a season by season award, but his body of work and currently season accomplishments make him most worthy.

After Chris and Kobe, LaBron will be an after thought. Now let’s get to DEE-TROIT Basketball. I see Detroit handled their business last evening. The 76ers, too, will soon be a memory. The eastern conference championship will not be as exciting as the west, but I suspect Detroit and Boston will do us proud. In the end, the smart play and early season use of the Detroit bench will tell the story. Boston has a great sixth man at best, but this will not be enough. This series requires a bench. Boston is lacking in this category.

I said I was done writing for the year, which did not allow me until now to express my concern about Tim Tebow winning the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore when in the past there were awesome, more awesome sophomores than Tebow, like Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson to name a few who could have been awarded that trophy who were not specifically because they were sophomores.

I let that concern slide. Today, I was presented with a bigger fight. Can somebody tell me why the hell Charles Woodson is not in the Pro Bowl? How many times does a brother have to show up and show out? Now, no average citizen hooped and holla’d over Sean Taylor’s senseless killing more than me, but with all due respect to his Family, Girlfriend and baby daughter, Mr. Taylor will not be showing up for the Pro Bowl, okay. I feel the gesture was great, but a moment of silence in his memory would have been more appropriate.

As far as the Minnesota Vikings receiving seven slots, I say, “WHY?” Did not the Green Bay Packers beat the Vikings twice convincingly? And pardon me if I am wrong, but the only Viking name I have heard this season with any real regularity was Adrian Peterson. I can name the Purple People Eaters faster than I can name the current roster's defensive or offensive line.

Sports announcers from Jaws to Deion Sanders have referred to Charles Woodson and Al Harris as the best DB tandem in the NFL. Webster’s Dictionary defines tandem as one following or behind the other like Fred and Ginger, Sonny and Cher, Gayle and Oprah. Not to throw salt on Al‘s parade, but that tandem couldn't exist without Charles Woodson.

Charles Woodson has been disrespected two years in a row. I am still trying to figure out why the hell his #2 jersey has not been retired at the University of Michigan. Shawn Crable or Clark Gable have no business wearing the jersey of the only defensive back in the history of college football to win the Heisman Trophy. Charles Woodson is the "Big Cheese" among college football players. He stands alone.

I heard Ron Jaworski just yesterday mention something about a player having a comeback year. Well in order to comeback, one would have had to have a career worth mentioning in the first place. Charles Woodson is such a player. I am mad as hell, and I could care less who knows it.

Before pre-season and the first snap of the regular, I told people that the Green Bay Packers were going to the Super Bowl. Nobody believed me. I got this to say to all the non-believers, “look out Dallas, we coming to git yo ass.”

For all you Detroit Lions fans out their saying hold the phone we are 5-2, I say you are of no consequence to this equation. I grew up in Detroit. I went to Thanksgiving games in Tiger Stadium on Trumbull. I’ve seen Mel Farr, Charlie Sanders, Lem Barney, Billy Sims, Barry Sanders and still no Super Bowl.

Lastly for the New York Giants who play in New Jersey, Michael Strahan looks lean and mean, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. My eyes looked into the magic ball, shuck it and it said, “Packers.”

Our society has sank a new low when we hand off the microphone, give the floor and lend credibility to a “dead-beat” father whose children by their own volition do not carry the last name of Boddie. If this is not disgraceful enough, he further demonstrates his immaturity and disloyalty by seizing the opportunity, “for fifteen minutes of fame”, at the expense of his sons’ reputation. Still further to add insult to injury, slaps Brenda Vick, a woman he did not marry until five years after the birth of two children, in the face who, with the assistance of her people, carried the load of both mother and father.

In times when we struggle to protect our children from Internet predators, instill in them values that protect them from bad choices and improper influences, where was daddy? Daddy wasn’t there.

Growing up in Detroit, I remember the role and importance of the alley. A lot of men matured as well as met their death in the alley. Michael Vick’s father should be escorted into an alley. Station a brother to the east and west of it and allow Brenda Vick, her family, her children and anybody else relevant to this party to pull this “bitch up”. If he is not dead by lessons end, then maybe he will resurface a man.

For those of you who feel that these comments are harsh, I only have this to say to you. There is nothing uglier than to be brought into the world due to no fault of your own only to have the experience of feeling unwanted, unloved and being unprovided for. If our children are angry, uncouth, classless, ignorant and make bad choices, we should look to ourselves. It is our blame. It is our shame.

Last week, I kept myself busy by responding to the people of Fort Myers, Florida in their response to Deion Sanders’ article on Michael Vick and the subsequent response of the NFL Network to him.

As the comments went back and forth, it was always my intention to remain respectful and I did. After all, I felt I was stepping in for a voice, similar to mine and others, which had been silenced all the while thinking and speaking not in his exact words, but marking how I thought those words might be used and articulated. I am not sure if I educated the people in that community, but they most definitely educated me. I learned that no matter how many gains and contributions African-Americans make, we still have a great work to do. This is by no means to suggest that change is our sole responsibility, but charity always starts at home and spreads abroad.

This lesson was best taught Saturday as I watched the Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Since first watching and comprehending the magnitude of what was happening, it was never more heartfelt, spiritual and memorable. Each man as well as their presenter had something very significant to say in terms of the honor itself, their lord and savior who was clearly at the head of their lives, and the careful selection of who was responsible for their success. But no one say it better than Jerry Jones when he said, “Michael Irvin is a Dallas Cowboy.”

There is nothing more American than apple pie, the World Series and being a Dallas Cowboy. All of these things represent what our nation hold dear and sacred. Even though African Americans have proven success when given the opportunity to participate in the American Dream, yet we are still made to feel unworthy.

I thought Michael Irvin’s induction was bitter sweet because I feel that Drew Pearson should be in the Hall of Fame. Drew Pearson was the original number 88, but after Michael spoke, where he was at that moment in time made me realize that it’s much greater than the respect given to a number, but the importance of respect due a man. Michael Irvin gets much respect, and his words were worthy to be praised.

Having said all this, we (African-Americans) must encourage and make sure our children feel good about themselves. Perhaps, we need to redefine who we LOOK UP to. Perhaps, we should GET UP from being complacent and NEVER GIVE UP on the fact that the road ahead is still paved with struggle. The mistakes we make are apart of a process that will eventually get us to place called, “Equals.”

Redefine Fan

In lieu of the Michael Vick situation and the NFL Network placing Deion Sanders’ column on hold, I think it is time to give some thought to what it means to be a fan.

For those of you who criticize Deion’s column, you have a right to your opinion, but to suggest that he is a thing of the past or a has been is insane. Deion Sanders is a first or at the very least second ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. I’m not sure about Cooperstown, but I will follow up and get back to you. Having said this, Deion Sanders has not only made a name for himself, a name mind you Fort Myers, Florida should be proud of, but a place in sports history. Like it or not, Mr. Sanders is an “ICON”, baby.

Today, I went to TMZ.com to read comments left by everyday citizens to find one that left an image in my mind for years to come. One writer wrote: Michael Vick should be hanged and while hanging castrated with a rusty fork. While I respect this individual’s right to his opinion, one could only ask, given the history of African-Americans in this country, why and how did we moved from an alleged crime to as Billie Holiday would sing it, a tree bearing strange fruit? Are you sure this is not about race?

I asked myself, who are these people, and as fans of athletics, do we have the right to hold athletes to standards that we fall short of ourselves. Again, if he did what is alleged, he should be punished. I don’t think anyone is in disagreement with this. Should he be banned from the NFL for life? I don’t think so, but this is my opinion. Should he receive the maximum jail time of 8 years? I don’t think so, but again, this is my opinion.

What I do know is that athletes are no different from you or me. People make mistakes. People do better when they know better. People also grow, and I know people change.

I am an avid sports fan. My father taught me everything I know about sports from its ugliest past to its present day triumphs. Do I think athletes make a lot of money? You bet, but I don’t begrudge them. They are paid what the market will bear. Do they participate in activities that they shouldn’t? Yes! Should our system of justice hold them accountable? Absolutely!

In addition to this, athletes make and continue to make enormous sacrifices to provide me, you, the fan with hours of memories that make and has made us laugh, cry, proud and yes, mad. I was so pissed at the Oakland Raiders for being in that blizzard in New England. Yes! Charles Woodson forced a Brady fumble. The hell with the “Tuck Rule”, but I digress. Let’s not take away from them their contribution to their sport because of off the field behavior. Keeping Barry Bonds, Pete Rose, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and Mark McGuire out of Cooperstown doesn't make their accomplishments or contributions to baseball any less real. Let’s do our part to ensure that we are all law abiding citizens, but to wish death and claim a grown man as property in the way that the NFL Network has done with Deion Sanders and I quote, “we control your image and opinions” is a hit way below the belt.

Both Deion Sanders and Michael Vick put their pants on the same as any man in American, white, black, green or purple. Sometimes, I wonder if the fans make more of them to compensate for the lack of hero they see in themselves.

First, I’d like to state for the record that I was not born and raised in neither Fort Myers, Florida nor do I hail from the great state of Texas.

I would like to state however that it is a sad day in America when we have to censor and censure a Deion Sanders article. I read his article, and I get it. It is extremely unfortunate that others were unable to capture its essence.

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and I can tell you that dog fighting is not new. I can also state unequivocally that the dogs at the center of this argument are not ones we truly care anything about.

I so thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Sanders’ connection to art imitating life and vice versa.

Question, when we watch the dog competitions on television, do you ever see them highlight the Pit Bull or the Rotweiler in the way as the Whippets, Poodles, Yorkies, Great Danes, Collies and the like? These are not the dogs in the center of the ring on Friday and Saturday nights I can assure you.

Another question, where were PETA and the Humane Society when the pit bull chewed up the baby and the local postman? In addition, where were PETA and the Humane Society when the police department used dogs and turned fire hosed on “real people” in the south during the turbulent sixties?

I hear your minds turning. We have most definitely arrived at the very issue of this “dog and pony show” displayed by the media and dog admiring organizations. You guessed it player, race.

In American, we still feel uncomfortable examining race and how it still plays a role in how we think, speak and behavior.

In the movie the Untouchables, Sean Connery’s character tells Kevin Costner everyone knows where the alcohol is, but what are you prepared to do? We know that dog fighting occurs and where it occurs. This is not new news, but what is also the same soup ole’ soup warmed over is our disproportionate treatment and opinions of African-Americans when we display that ever so often trait of being human and subject to error.

Our system of justice requires a man/woman is innocent until “proven” guilty. We should allow Michael Vick his day in court and those whose opinions that are different from our own their right to express it.

As Deion Sanders indicated, there are far more pressing issues of concern such as, will we ever learn the truth about Pat Tillman? Who will ultimately be punished for outing Joe Wilson’s wife? Should we be concerned that the courts dismissed her lawsuit against the Vice-President? Her career was taken away from her due to no fault of her own. I feel that she should be compensated. Who speaks for Mrs. Wilson?

Suggestion, I would be pleased to continue Mr. Sanders’ article in his absence. On this any many other issues we share the same core values and opinions ones of which should not be silenced.

Coach Rob

With everything going on in the media this week, I guess I could have been distracted by another mainstream sports story, but I am choosing to stay with the feel good story, the right story, the Coach Rob story.

Since 1941, it’s always been Grambling. While I would be totally remiss in not pointing out that Coach Rob was the first collegiate coach to record 400 wins, responsible for sending 200 young men to the NFL, four of which have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Willie Davis, Willie Brown, Charlie Joiner, and Buck Buchanan), to solely focus on the numbers is neither a challenge nor a tribute.

In a time when the African-American collegiate level football player had no place else but a Historically Black College to go, Coach Rob not only taught them the fundamentals of the game, but instilled in them a set of values, rich tradition and a work ethic that transcends the game of football.

The soul of Coach Eddie Robinson runs through the veins of all the lives he touched. Those life lessons are still ever present among us as we go through our daily routines of being responsible African-Americans and American.

As I examine the life of this great man, I am continuously reminded of how good and very well meaning people can still be fascinated by the story of the same old soup warmed over when at the end of the day, it’s still Grambling! Let the symbolism and power of this statement ring in our ears as we reflect on Coach Rob’s life, the times and circumstances in which he made an impact as we continue to question what our impact will be as we face these still trying times ahead.

2007 ESPY AWARDS

On Tuesday, March 27, 2007, ESPN announced that LeBron James and Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2007 ESPY Awards set to air July 15, 2007. I would like to make a case for Charles Woodson to be named the 2007 ESPY “Comeback Player of the Year.”

Before turf toe, “The Tuck Rule”, the shoulder injury, the broken leg and the beat down in Super Bowl XXXVII, Charles Woodson was drafted in the first round, 4th pick overall, in 1998 by the Oakland Raiders. In 1998 , he was name NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, selected to Pro Bowls 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, he should have been in 2007 but I digress, was named All-Pro 3 times (1998-2001 seasons) and the first Raider since 1971 to start in all 16 games.

On April 26, 2006, Charles Woodson signed with the Green Bay Packers, led the NFL with 8 interceptions, a career high, and returned punts and kickoffs.

No finer script could have been written for this Ohio native. From the Big Ten to the Heisman Trophy, the Pros, “Title Town” and yes, second ballot Canton? “You think?”

Hello. I’m Toni and welcome to “Fair Game.”

This is the beginning of a fun filled ride of commentary that will keep you on the edge of your seat, laughing, learning and begging for more, but first a few ground rules. Any sports story is considered “fair game”; however, I caution you that this blog’s theme centers on revenue generating sports at the collegiate level, the NFL and NBA. You are free to comment about other areas, but you will most likely not get a rise or response out of me. It isn’t that hockey, soccer, baseball and the rest are not important, but this is my blog, and I love football and basketball. Sure, I will entertain you from time to time with stories about other sports areas which may overlap, but that’s it.

Lastly, for those of you out there who love playing “devil’s advocate,” this site is for you. I may not agree with your position, but as long as the delivery is respectful, you may say whatever you like, but “beware” I, too, exercise this same authority.

Plan B

As I mourn the passing of Darryl Stingley, I smile as tears run unashamedly down my face when I think about the numerous conversations I’ve had over the years with my student athletes. I would ask them, “have you ever heard of Daryl Stingley?” The response 100% of the time would be no! Once I learned the answer that I already knew, I would make Darryl Stingley their homework assignment for the night.

I was happy to see that their curiosity motivated them to find out something about Darryl Stingley. The next day I would see them, and they would have the typical answer for me. They’d say Darryl Stingley was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He played Wide Receiver for Purdue University, they made sure to mention that to the Big Ten fanatic as I was called, and he played for the New England Patriots. No one ever mentioned “the play” on August 12, 1978 that left Darryl Stingley quadriplegic. So, they asked, “why do I need to know about him?” Why is Darryl Stingley important?

My response would be that the Darryl Stingley lecture is about dreams and the need for a Plan B. You see, all of my student athletes had dreams of going pro. It was what they ate, slept and dreamt about. While I never made light of my students or student athletes’ dreams, I felt as If I would have been an irresponsible educator if I didn’t educate them about the realities of going “pro” and the importance of an education. It was also important for me to illustrate an example to them of a person who realized that dream, and because of an injury needed a Plan B.

I once heard famed Sociologist, Dr. Harry Edwards say, “An African-American male had a better chance at being hit by a shooting star than becoming a star in the NFL, Major League Baseball and the NBA.” I don’t think Dr. Edwards was about killing dreams in making this statement either, but the reality of the situation is that there are only so many teams and too few opportunities.

I do salute my student athletes, who realized their dream (Reagan Upshaw, Tarik Glen, Lamond Murray), but I also salute those of my students, as the commercial says, “who have gone pro in something other than sports.”

Thanks Darryl! May your everlasting light continue to shine brightly upon others.

Hard act to follow

Last week I read on the Internet that Deion Sander’s former wife or her family is accusing Deion of stealing his children’s money. Firstly, I happen to really like Deion Sanders. Not that his past is not festively filled with incident after incident I’m sure he looks back on not without some shame. Remember the time Deion poured ice on the man in the locker room to cool him down, and the time he… Well no matter, this commentary has a Deion Sanders slant.

Let me just tell you what I think. Besides coming in a strong fourth on my all time DB list with Ronnie Lott leading the way followed by “The Assassin” Jack Tatum and Mel Blount, ladies some men are hard acts to follow and Deion Sanders is one of them. His former wife just as we all has truly witnessed a transformation, on his part, for the better. Sometimes, as unfortunate as it is, the second wife gets the better man. I truly do not wish to make light of this subject because it is serious, but what is even more serious is the fact that the African-American men are constantly looking over their shoulders and in most cases with good reason in America. From my vantage point, Mr. Sanders does not appear to be the type man you can’t talk to over a cup of coffee. In the future, I would hope if not for the children’s sake that an issue such as this be kept private.

As for the former Mrs. Sanders, Deion was incapable of loving anyone at that time in his life because he didn’t love himself. I hope that you too will make a new life with someone who can reciprocate that mutual feeling of love because all women who want that deserve it. As he (God) would have it, it was not meant to be with “Prime Time.”

Remember, living well is the best revenge.
